Biomedical Engineering

April 2022

Dear colleagues, students and faculty,

Lori SettonI am excited to share more faculty accomplishments, research innovation and student news from Spring 2022. Our lead story brings me personal as well as professional joy as we celebrate the election of Prof. Farshid Guilak into the National Academy of Engineers. As my husband and life-long collaborator, you'll know I delight in celebrating that news.

We also delight in celebrating the election of four new members of our community to AIMBE. In total, 19 faculty members of the WashU BME community, and even more alumni serving departments and industry around the USA, now serve as Fellows and support AIMBE's mission of science advocacy and policy engagement.

This summer, we're thrilled to begin our new American Heart Association-sponsored summer research program for undergraduates led by Prof. Chao Zhou and continue our St. Louis Summer Internship Program partnering students with startups in the region. And in partnership with seven other institutions in our region, we will welcome 14 scholars to campus for the inaugural Rising BME Scholars Regional Conference to strengthen and diversify the next generation of academic researchers in BME.

We wish you active and prosperous days ahead as all our campuses emerge to welcome new students and new programs and celebrate our collective achievements in BME.

Kind regards,

Lori A. Setton
Professor and Chair
