Please provide your lab and description of research.
I am working under S. Joshua Swamidass, MD, applying machine-learning techniques and decision theory to chemical biology and clinical data.

Where did you complete your undergraduate degree?
Stetson University

What played into your decision to get a graduate engineering degree?
I participated in a research experience for undergraduates (REU), which was my first time doing research of any sort. I loved the fact that I wasn't doing the same thing every day, and that there was always something new and exciting to learn because the field is almost always changing. I like the flexibility of working on several projects and the ability to be creative in them as well. I wanted to feel like I was making a difference and the best way to do that in my mind was getting a PhD and doing research.

Why did you pick WashU?
I picked WashU for the location and the faculty. I liked how many faculty research interests seemed to align with mine.

What was your favorite course and why?
Machine Learning. This was my favorite course so far because, although it was challenging, I learned something new every day. In addition, we had several hands-on projects that simulated problems we could be working on in the real world.

Who is your favorite instructor and why?
My favorite instructor is Marion Neumann. She teaches her classes in a way that engages the students. She also really wants her students to understand the material in a way that will stick for a lifetime and not just for the duration of the class.

What advice would you give to a new student?
There will always be hard times or obstacles in the way of your success. It's how you overcome them and move forward that matter.

What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
My favorite thing about St. Louis is the countless number of restaurants and the beautiful Forest Park.

What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
Clubs are always a good way to meet people. I regularly attend our department happy hours.

Do you have any work history? If yes, please describe.
Yes, I've worked as a web developer and a software delivery intern.

What are your plans for the future?
I am keeping my options open for either a research position in academia or industry.
