Luise Ge
Computer Science & Engineering
Degree pursuing: Computer Science
Where did you complete your undergraduate degree?
University of Edinburgh
Please provide your lab and description of research
I belong to Yevgniy Vorobeychik's lab and currently I am focusing on computational learning theory with a taste of social choice theory. There are still many possible directions I could get into in the future.
What played into your decision to get a graduate engineering degree?
For me, nothing delights me more than absorbing and sharing more knowledge. Thus I always knew I wanted to get a PhD. Interestingly, my background is rather theoretical as I was focusing on theoretical computer science and have obtained a master degree in pure maths specialised in geometry and topology. But when I looked back, I realised that among a wide range of research projects I have done, one topic I enjoyed the most was on fair allocation and algorithmic game theory, which requires a lot of maths, but also have a tighter connection to the world. So I decided to continue working on these kind of things!
Why did you pick WashU?
Firstly, I was longing to come to the states because I had never been here before and as an adventurous being I wanted to explore! As for my studies, I found my current supervisor the best fit of my research interests. While I was being indecisive, many of my teachers from the UK gave me lots of encourangment and support. I am really grateful to them. In the end, I have heard of St. Louis as a beautiful and peaceful place highly suitable for studying. Therefore I came : )
What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
So far its autumn! Placewise, I found Joe's cafe and art galleries a hidden gem and the arts district in the Grand center quite charming. Oh, and the Cahokia Mounds is purely magical.
What advice would you give to a new student?
It could be a little bit hard to get adapted into an new environment and stay on top of both courseworks and research at the same time. Please ask people around for help because we have all been there! Everyone is friendly here and making connections could make your life much easier and much more fun!
What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
Sailing Club
What are your plans for the future?
Ideally, I would like to become a professor.
