Where did you complete your undergraduate degree?
Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany

Please provide your lab and description of research
I joined the NeuroPhoto Lab, led by Dr. Joseph Culver. My research involves task-based and spontaneous human brain mapping methods using High-Density Diffuse Optical Tomography (HD-DOT).

What played into your decision to get a graduate engineering degree?
I have a background in neuroscience and love doing research. During my studies, I became interested in developing novel brain imaging methods. This fascination led me to pursue a graduate degree in engineering through the Imaging Science PhD program. This program allows me to gain a deeper technical understanding of imaging methods and I really appreciate the interdisciplinary character.

Why did you pick WashU?
WashU is an excellent institution for imaging science research and provides graduate students with numerous opportunities for both research and professional development. I enjoy the collaborative environment across departments and fields.

What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
St. Louis has low living costs, beautiful big parks, and tons of free fun activities to do.

What advice would you give to a new student?
Don't be afraid to reach out to senior students for advice or to ask any questions you may have about life as a graduate student, the lab you plan on joining or classes. Take advantage of rotations to find a lab that aligns with your interests and expectations for mentoring.

What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
Join AGES (Association for Graduate Engineering Students) events to meet and engage with students across McKelvey.

What are your plans for the future?
I haven't decided yet if I want to pursue a career in academia or industry, however, I really enjoy research and want to stay involved with it!
