Why did you decide to study engineering?
I really wanted to find a major that combined my passion for robotics, medicine and biology, and provided me with the skills needed to positively impact the lives of others. I was exposed to general engineering at summer camps in middle school and then robotics throughout high school.
Are you performing any research in a lab?
Yes, in Jessica Wagenseil’s Vascular Mechanics lab where I study the cardiovascular system, specifically, the protein elastin.
Why did you pick WashU?
I chose WashU because I wanted to attend an academically challenging university that encouraged collaboration between peers rather than competition. I also knew WashU would provide me with the opportunities needed to reach my future goals.
Who is your favorite instructor and why?
Professor Patricia Widder because I really like how she is able to break down complicated topics in an easy to understand way while still keeping her classes interesting and challenging. I always feel a sense of belonging in her courses, and it’s nice to know that she’s there to help if you need it.
What advice would you give to a new student?
Start off slow. There’s no rush at all, so give yourself the time to adjust to your new environment and classes. Set up a schedule that works for you, and try your best to stick with it. Also don’t be afraid to ask for help there are plenty of people who have been in your current position so it is always nice to get advice from others.
What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
I really like the variety of different restaurants and the numerous things to do in the city.
What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
I would recommend puzzle club, inSite and Wind Ensemble, as these are all activities that I enjoy on campus. There are so many club offerings so there are bound to be some that interest you.
What are your plans for the future?
After undergrad, I’m hoping to pursue an joint MD-PhD degree so that I can receive the proper training to be able to conduct research and practice as a physician.
