Research

Professor Klaesner’s research has focused on rehabilitation engineering. He has worked with several researchers throughout the medical school on variety of projects including biomechanics of wheelchair propulsion, quantifying the movement of individuals with low back pain, analyzing recovery of upper extremity movement in patients who have had a stroke, and the prevention of neuropathic foot ulcers.

Biography

In 1998, Joseph W. Klaesner joined the faculty at the Washington University School of Medicine and began assisting in the teaching duties for the newly formed Department of Biomedical Engineering. He has taught all of the senior BME design classes since. Before coming to WashU, he earned his PhD and MS degrees in BME at Vanderbilt University (1993 and 1995). Professor Klaesner also worked as a senior electrical engineer at McDonnell Douglas after graduating from Marquette with both a BS in BME and a BS in EE in 1987. While teaching senior design, he was chosen as a top innovator in St. Louis by Alive Magazine (2015).
