Thind wins graduate student award from Materials Research Society
Arashdeep Thind, a doctoral student in the Institute of Materials Science & Engineering, has won a prestigious award from the Materials Research Society
Arashdeep Singh Thind, a doctoral student in the Institute of Materials Science & Engineering, received the Graduate Student Silver Award from the Materials Research Society (MRS) at its recent spring meeting in Phoenix.
Thind was one of 13 recipients of the silver award, which honor and encourage graduate students whose academic achievements and materials research display a high level of excellence and distinction. MRS recognizes students of exceptional ability who show promise for significant future achievement in materials research.
Thind, who works in the lab of Rohan Mishra, assistant professor of mechanical engineering & materials science, is based at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, where he performs imaging and spectroscopy at the atomic scale with powerful electron microscopes. He uses the combination of quantum-mechanical calculations and electron microscopy to design new semiconductors and investigate the role of defects at the atomic scale. He has been working on finding safe and efficient alternatives for lead-halide perovskites, which are used in solar cells and light emitting devices.
