EECE doctoral students take second place at Illinois water challenge
Yanran Xu and Zixuan Wang led their team to second place at the first-ever Intelligent Water Systems Challenge, hosted by the Illinois Water Environment Association
A team led by students from the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis won second place at the first-ever Intelligent Water Systems Challenge, hosted by the Illinois Water Environment Association. First and third place went to teams from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Yanran Xu and Zixuan Wang, doctoral students in the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering, were joined by team member Shaker Nairat, a student from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Xu served as the team lead.
The Intelligent Water Systems Challenge encourages students to develop solutions for real-world environmental problems using advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Xu and Wang are members of Zhen (Jason) He’s lab. He is a professor of energy, environmental & chemical engineering who develops advanced technologies to recover valuable resources from wastewater.
“I’m happy our students competed so well against the engineering students from UIUC,” He said. “McKelvey Engineering made a good impression in our neighboring state.”
