McKelvey Engineering celebrates first-ever ESE Day
The first-ever event, hosted by the Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering, celebrated the achievements of the department's students and faculty
The Preston M. Green Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering recently celebrated the work of its students, researchers and faculty during its first-ever ESE Day. Nearly 300 people attended the event, which featured a research poster session, an open lab session and a keynote presentation by Jennifer Morovitz, director of technology security at AT&T.
“ESE Day was created to bring together our community and to celebrate who we are and what we do,” said Bruno Sinopoli, the Das Family Distinguished Professor and chair. “I’m thrilled by the success of this year’s event and am already looking forward to hosting the next one.”
Students also were honored at the event, including recipients of the David H. Levy Outstanding Senior Award and Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. The Levy Award honors students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement during the four years of their undergraduate education. Recipients of the 2022 award were:
- James Cevasco, who earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
- Thomas Emerson, who earned a bachelor's degree in applied science in systems science & engineering
- Thomas Goon, who earned bachelor's degrees in systems science & engineering and in computer science
- Leo Karp, who earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
- Meagan Konst, who earned bachelor's degrees in electrical and computer engineering
- Weijia “Will” Li, who earned a bachelor's degree in systems science & engineering
- Yueheng Shi, who earned a bachelor's degree in applied science in electrical engineering
- Allison Todd, who earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
- Caitlind Walker, who earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with a second major in French in Arts & Sciences
The Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes students who have performed outstanding doctoral work. Recipients of the 2022 award were:
- Weidong Cao, who earned a doctorate in electrical engineering
- Suranjana Samanta, who earned a doctorate in electrical engineering
- Oumeng Zhang, who earned a doctorate in electrical engineering
The department also honored Chuan Wang, assistant professor of electrical & systems engineering, with the Department Chair Award for Outstanding Teaching.
“Dr. Wang is receiving this award for his continued efforts in teaching ESE 436: Semiconductor Devices,” Sinopoli said. “Dr. Wang continues to take in student feedback to improve his course and continues to demonstrate his commitment to not only his students, but the department as a whole.”
The department plans to host the event next year and invite more alumni to better provide students with networking and mentoring opportunities.
