Engineering Communication Center (ECC)

Our faculty offer coursework to prepare students for careers in engineering. We are dedicated to both their professional development and social/environmental awareness so they can contribute their problem-solving strengths to real world challenges.

Community engaged courses move online

Engineers in the Community has been exceptionally popular, and, as students describe it, “transformative.” The course will transition from a “community connected” course to a “community engaged” course.

Engineering Communication Center Updates

ECC founder and former director James C. Ballard, who retired in 2024, died on September 29, 2025.  We are all honored that WashU flew the WashU flag at Brookings Hall at half-staff for Professor Ballard in early October.  In his honor, in 2024 the ECC created The James C. Ballard Excellence in Technical Communication Award, which is the top prize in the annual technical writing competition. He was a kind leader, an excellent educator, a careful editor and commenter on student and faculty writing, and a wonderful mentor and friend to his colleagues, and his WashU students and colleagues will miss him.
