Research
Prof. Lew leads the Lew Lab, which develops imaging technologies that reveal how biomolecules are organized, interact, and function at the nanoscale. The lab integrates optical engineering, computational imaging, statistical estimation theory, and biophysical chemistry to create microscopes that measure not only where molecules are located, but also how they are oriented, moving, and responding to their local environments.
The lab’s research pioneers multidimensional single-molecule imaging methods that extract rich structural, dynamical, and chemical information from individual molecules. By combining innovations in optics, computation, and molecular measurement, the Lew Lab develop new tools for studying biomolecular condensates, cellular membranes, protein assemblies, and other complex biological systems, connecting nanoscale organization to biological function and disease.
Biography
Matthew D. Lew is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Preston M. Green Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, where he develops new approaches for multidimensional single-molecule imaging.
Before joining Washington University in 2015, Lew earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University under Nobel Laureate W. E. Moerner and completed postdoctoral training at the Stanford University School of Medicine under Adam de la Zerda. He is an Optica Fellow and recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and his work spans engineering, chemistry, physics, and biology through collaborations that advance the science of molecular measurement.
