Joseph Levin
Biomedical Engineering
Where did you complete your undergraduate degree?
Assumption University / Washington University in St. Louis (Dual Degree)
Please provide your lab and description of research.
I work in Professor Lori Setton's lab. I use micro-CT imaging and Scanco automated segmentation algorithms to determine the effect of a high fat diet on intervertebral disc degeneration in mice.
What played into your decision to get a graduate engineering degree?
I also plan on going to medical school, where I want to continue research. I felt getting a masters degree first would better enable me to incorporate biomedical engineering into my future research.
Why did you pick WashU?
I did the 3-3 dual degree engineering program. Getting the masters degree was such an easy process, with such an easy transition from undergrad, that there was no reason not to.
What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
There are so many biomedical engineering/biotechnology start up companies!
What advice would you give to a new student?
Take advantage of all the opportunities WashU has to offer. Read all your emails, go to seminars you find interesting, and get involved in the community.
What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
WURocketry, WashU Robotics, WashU Racing
What are your plans for the future?
I plan on serving in the USAF as a pilot, and then medical school.
