Please provide your lab and description of research
I am pursuing my PhD under Dr. Aimilia Gastounioti in the Breast Image Computing Lab. My research combines computational breast image analysis, artificial intelligence, and informatics to develop frameworks with the potential to make a clinical impact on advancing breast cancer screening and prevention strategies.
What played into your decision to get a graduate engineering degree?
My undergraduate research in medical image analysis, combined with my industry experience in AI and data science, along with my passion for research and curiosity to develop innovative solutions, were the key factors motivating me to pursue a graduate engineering degree.
Why did you pick WashU?
I picked WashU because of its excellent research facilities and faculty. The imaging science program here is interdisciplinary in nature, integrating expertise from both the engineering and medical schools, which I find very exciting. Additionally, WashU is one of the leading institution in imaging science research, making it an ideal place for my studies.
What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
My favorite thing about St. Louis is its vibrant cultural scene. I love exploring its diverse food scene, including trying out different restaurants and wineries. I also love spending time in Forest Park, going hiking in nearby areas, and playing games at Armory STL
What advice would you give to a new student?
Maintain a work-life balance by prioritizing both your mental and physical well-being alongside your studies. Take advantage of school-wide opportunities and resources, pursue your research interests, and build networks with your peers and professors. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them if you need help.
What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
I recommend getting involved in campus-wide student organizations and events such as AGES (don’t miss their Spring Formal and Float Trip), GPC, and GSS. Also, check out the WashU Rec Center’s BearFit classes, like Dark Room Cycle and Zumba, for a fun way to stay active.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to either continue in academia or explore research positions in industry, depending on where I find the most fulfilling opportunities to apply my skills and advance my career.
