Xuan Liu

Please provide your lab and description of research.
I work in both Dr. Jay Turner's group and Dr. Randall Martin's group. Dr. Turner's research primarily focuses on air quality characterization and management with emphasis on field measurements and data analysis to support a variety of applications in the atmospheric science, regulation and policy, and health studies arenas. Prof. Martin's research focuses on characterizing atmospheric composition using satellite observations, global models, and in situ measurements to inform effective policies surrounding major environmental and public health challenges ranging from air quality to climate change. My current project is developing methods to refine the estimate of mineral dust mass in ambient particulate matter.

Where did you complete your undergraduate degree?
Xiamen University, China

What played into your decision to get a graduate engineering degree?
I like figuring things out and I hope to be a researcher working on improving the environment.

Why did you pick WashU?
WashU is a prominent university. It is home to the world's first and only Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering. I have a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and I am interested in environmental research especially aerosol science and engineering. It's a perfect fit for me.

What was your favorite course and why?
My favorite course is Aerosol Science and Technology. Although it is a difficult course, you will learn important knowledge in the aerosol field and improve your skills in many ways after you accomplish those challenging tasks.

Who is your favorite instructor and why?
My favorite instructor is Dr. Janie Brennan. She is good at presenting in a clear manner, keeping students involved, and using her enthusiasm to make classes fun.

What advice would you give to a new student?  
Be open to challenges and remember to look after yourself.

What is your favorite thing about St. Louis?
The beautiful environment.

What campus activities or groups would you recommend to a new student?
The activities hosted by the Association of Graduate Engineering Students such as the networking event and monthly happy hour.

What are your plans for the future?
My current plan is to become a researcher in a company or a non-profit organization in the environmental research area.
