Five researchers from McKelvey Engineering among the world’s most cited
The faculty rank in the top 1% by citations for their field in the past decade
The Institute for Scientific Information has named Feng Jiao, Randall Martin, Rohit Pappu, Gang Wu and Lan Yang, all faculty members in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, among the most highly cited researchers in the sciences in 2025.
The annual list recognized 6,868 individual researchers from 60 countries and regions who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the past decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index. The evaluation and selection process relies on data from the Web of Science citation index, with analysis performed by data scientists at the ISI at Clarivate.
The McKelvey Engineering faculty were among 53 faculty with primary affiliations at WashU named to the list. WashU ranked ninth in the United States and 15th (tie) in the world with 53 individual researchers.
Those named include:
Feng Jiao, the Lauren and Lee Fixel Distinguished Professor in the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering;
Randall Martin, the Raymond R. Tucker Distinguished Professor in the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering;
Rohit V. Pappu, the Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering;
Gang Wu, professor of energy, environmental & chemical engineering;
Lan Yang, the Edwin H. & Florence G. Skinner Professor in the Preston M. Green Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering
“The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at WashU who demonstrate significant and broad influence in their fields,” David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate, said. “They exemplify excellence in their research as well as integrity in their publication and citation practices. These researchers continue to shape the future of science, technology and academia globally and deliver innovation that drives societal progress.”
