Feng Jiao, the Lauren and Lee Fixel Distinguished Professor of energy, environmental & chemical engineering in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has been chosen to receive the 2025 American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Energy & Fuels (ENFL) Mid-Career Award.

The ENFL Mid-Career Award was established in 2021 and recognizes outstanding contributions in energy and fuel chemistry. This award honors scientists who are midway into their careers, typically within 10 to 25 years of earning their last degree or completing a postdoctoral position. It acknowledges the service to the ENFL and the broader scientific community. Recipients are selected based on their research excellence, impact on the field and leadership within the profession.

Jiao will receive his award during the ACS Fall 2025 meeting in August in Washington, DC.

The Jiao research group focuses on advancing electrochemical technologies to address global challenges in energy storage, chemical manufacturing and food production. The lab focuses on two primary objectives: developing high-performance CO₂ and CO electrolysis systems that surpass conventional processes and designing high-performance materials for energy applications. His work contributes substantially to carbon utilization, ultimately driving towards a circular carbon economy.

Throughout his career, Jiao has received numerous awards and honors, including the 2014 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Jiao was recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate in both 2023 and 2024 and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2023, he also served as program chair for the American Chemical Society’s Energy & Fuels Division. Most recently, Jiao was appointed the Lauren and Lee Fixel Distinguished Professor, a role that supports the newly launched Food and Agriculture Research Mission (FARM) initiative aimed at driving transformative change in global food systems.

Jiao is an editor of Chemical Engineering Journal and an editorial board member of Materials Today Sustainability. He is an advisory board member of Renewables, Journal of Materials Chemistry, Cell Reports Physical Science, and Trends in Chemistry.
