College Credit for Coursework taken in High School

Students who completed college-level coursework while enrolled in high school may be eligible to receive transfer credit at WashU. Eligibility is determined based on university and McKelvey transfer credit policies and the circumstances under which the course was taken.

Eligibility Requirements

WashU permits the transfer of credit earned at other colleges and universities if all of the following conditions are met:

1. The course is one for which credit would normally be awarded at Washington University.
2. The course was taken at a fully accredited college or university.
   - and -
3. The course:
   • Was taught on the campus of a college or university; and
   • Was enrolled in primarily by duly matriculated college students (i.e., high school graduates); and
   • Was taught by a regular college faculty member. The course did NOT count toward high school graduation requirements.

Action Needed:

If the above requirements are met, your first step is to have your high school guidance counselor or registrar email verification of the course(s) directly to McKelvey Academic Services.

The verification should identify which courses were taken for college credit and confirm they meet the eligibilty requirements listed above.

Questions About Eligibility

Students who are unable to meet all the requirements above but believe they qualify for accelerated placement should contact the Office of Undergraduate Programs for circumstantial review.
