Quing Zhu, the Edwin H. Murty Professor of Engineering in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, will serve as interim director of the Center for Women’s Health Engineering effective Oct. 1.

Zhu will succeed Michelle Oyen, who is stepping down as director and transitioning to a new role at Wayne State University. Oyen served as the inaugural center director upon its launch in 2022 and promoted collaboration building opportunities with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Center for Regenerative Medicine, both at the School of Medicine. Oyen served as a vocal advocate for women’s health engineering research and supported new outreach and training opportunities in McKelvey Engineering.

Zhu joined the McKelvey School of Engineering in 2016 with a highly established research program focused on cancer detection and diagnosis of ovarian, cervical, uterine and endometrial cancers.  Zhu was pivotal in building stronger partnerships around engineering and women’s health and established a team to form what is now the Center for Women’s Health Engineering. Zhu has been named a fellow of Optica, of SPIE- International Society for Optics and Photonics and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
