The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has awarded Janie Brennan, senior lecturer in the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering (EECE) in the McKelvey School of Engineering, the Ray W. Fahien Award for early career excellence in chemical engineering education.

The award, given annually to an educator who has shown evidence of vision and contribution to chemical engineering education, honors the legacy of Ray W. Fahien. Fahien was editor of the Chemical Engineering Education journal from 1967-1995, establishing it as a premier publication vehicle in the field.

Brennan joined the faculty at WashU in 2015 after earning a doctoral degree studying protein-based adhesives at Purdue University. In addition to teaching courses, advising students and helping to coordinate summer undergraduate research programs, she serves as associate chair for undergraduate education in EECE.

As an active member of both ASEE and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Brennan stays informed of the newest evidence-based teaching methods that will provide a rigorous and engaging learning experience for her students. She regularly engages in the scholarship of teaching and learning with an emphasis on process safety and laboratory courses.

Founded in 1893, ASEE is a nonprofit organization of individuals and institutions committed to furthering education in engineering and engineering technology.
