Amit Pathak, professor of mechanical engineering & materials science in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has been invited to serve as a standing member of the Modeling and Analysis of Biological Systems (MABS) study section, a Bioengineering Sciences & Technologies (BST) integrated review group in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review.

MABS reviews applications concerned with the development of modeling/enabling technologies for understanding the complexity of biological systems. The scope of these systems ranges from molecular, to supramolecular, to genes, to organelles, to cellular, to tissue and to organ-level studies. 

The group also reviews applications concerned with integrating computational modeling and analytical experimentation to understand complex biological systems. The scope of these systems covers the full range of biological scales from the molecular to the population level, and the content is inclusive across broad biological domains. Both hypothesis-driven and data-driven applications are considered. 

Pathak's research interests include mechanobiology of the cell and interactions between cells and extracellular matrices. In particular, his research aims to understand how groups of cells sense and remember the mechanical properties of their extracellular environment, with implications for development, regeneration and cancer. His lab tackles this problem through a multidisciplinary approach that includes tissue-mimicking matrix platforms, cell biology assays, multi-scale imaging and predictive biophysical computational models.
