Longtime faculty member Lloyd "Bob" Brown died Saturday, May 25, 2019
Lloyd "Bob" Brown Sr., a 30-year faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering in the McKelvey School of Engineering, died Saturday, May 25, 2019. He was 94.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and earning a bachelor's degree, Brown earned master's and doctoral degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, then worked in industry for several years before returning to teach in the Department of Electrical Engineering for more than 30 years. He was given the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1970, and received several "Outstanding Faculty of the Year" awards. Later, he became a highly respected fire investigator and forensic casualty consultant.
"Lloyd "Bob" Brown was a fixture in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis for decades," said Joseph O'Sullivan, the Samuel C. Sachs Professor of Electrical Engineering and professor and dean of the UMSL/WashU Joint Undergraduate Engineering Program. "Students loved his engaging teaching style. When I arrived in 1986, my office was directly across the hall from Bob Brown's. There was always a steady stream of students in his office. He was laid back and made everyone feel welcome and at ease. Bob Brown inspired many former students both in academic and industrial careers. He was very kind and supporting of me when I was a young faculty member."
Brown is survived by four children: James V. Brown, Lloyd Brown Jr., Trish Brown and Jeanne Schober; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, and other family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Vail Brown.
