The building honors the late longtime dean James M. McKelvey Sr.
James M. McKelvey, Sr. Hall, the new home of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, was officially dedicated Oct. 15 in a ceremony attended by more than 200 guests. The building, which honors the late longtime dean James M. McKelvey Sr., is located at the northeast corner of the Danforth Campus and houses research laboratories, specialized facilities and student collaboration space. It opened in January 2021.
Speakers at the event included Chancellor Andrew D. Martin; Aaron Bobick, dean and the James M. McKelvey Professor; Roch Guérin, the Harold B. & Adelaide G. Welge Professor of Computer Science and department chair; Emma McMillian, a junior majoring in computer science + mathematics; James McKelvey Jr., an accomplished engineer, artist and entrepreneur, as well as a Washington University alumnus and a member of the university’s Board of Trustees; and Judith McKelvey, MD, wife of McKelvey Sr. and a WashU alumna.
The building was made possible by a $15 million lead gift from McKelvey Jr., who attended the event with his family, including his wife, Anna; brother, Robert and his wife, Stacey; Judy McKelvey; Charles Forbes and Don Mosby. Beverly Wendland, university provost; Andrew E. Newman, chair of the Board of Trustees, and his wife, Peggy; and Stephen F. and Camilla T. Brauer, chairman of Hunter Engineering Co. and local philanthropist, respectively, were also in attendance
