Doctoral student named 2022 Mirzayan Fellow
Maren Loe, a student in the Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering, will work with staff at the National Academy of Science to learn more about health care policy and its impact on research
Maren Loe, a doctoral student at Washington University School of Medicine, was named a 2022 Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellow. Loe completed the requirements for a doctoral degree in systems science & mathematics in 2022 and is completing her medical degree through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MTSP).
“I’m so honored to be a Mirzayan fellow in the 2022 cohort,” Loe said. “This cohort, like the 2021 cohort, has fewer fellows than previous years due to COVID, so I’m even more grateful to have been selected. My peers in the fellowship are all very impressive, and I’m eager to work with and learn from them.”
The Mirzayan Fellowship allows researchers early in their careers to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, D.C., to learn more about the role scientists and engineers play in developing science and technology policy. Loe will work with National Academy of Sciences staff on the Board on Health Sciences Policy.
“I’m eager to learn how policy decisions are made for traumatic brain injuries and neuroscience research and what the consequences of those decisions are,” Loe said. “It’s a big change from graduate school, where my focus was a set of very narrow problems in brain injury and EEG analysis, to now considering the research field as a whole and understanding how researchers, clinicians and industry leaders can work together to improve research and patient outcomes.”
